Winter Showdown in Penola brings community and agriculture together

The Winter Showdown in Penola, held over the June long weekend, was a fantastic celebration of agriculture, youth, and community spirit.

The event brought together over 300 people and more than 100 head of cattle for two days of competition and connection.

The Showdown featured junior judging on Friday night, followed by led steer and heifer classes and handler competitions on Saturday. Designed to encourage young people to develop their skills and passion for cattle showing, the event highlights the commitment and care that underpins agricultural life.

Reid Stockfeeds, alongside Muirs/Abbey Animal Health, proudly sponsored the Champion Intermediate Heifer, won by St Pauls Cal Miss Lucky V412, and the Reserve Champion Senior Heifer, awarded to Keajura Park Brentvale Krystal V2.

For Marci Beighton from Muirs, the weekend carried special meaning:

This year was extra special for me as my 3-year-old granddaughter Lexie made her debut in the Junior Handler class with her calf Daphne!”

Marci also spoke to the importance of events like this:

Showing cattle is not just about the show ring, it teaches kids so much about caring for their animals. Daily feeding, daily grooming, washing, drying, and teaching them to lead. It requires dedication, empathy, patience, courage and commitment with countless hours of preparation.”

She added:

With Animal Health being such a huge area of growth for us, we feel it is so important that we are seen supporting the people who support us… encouraging the future generation in agriculture, supporting their passion, rewarding their dedication and acknowledging their contributions.”

At Reid Stockfeeds, we are proud to support initiatives like the Winter Showdown, which celebrate the next generation of farmers and the regional communities that nurture them.
